Day 4

Our day began with a good breakfast at Holiday Inn Express this morning. We sang for a relatively large crowd at breakfast this morning. The 2 women who prepared breakfast for us asked if we would come back and sing every morning. They loved it.

Sara Beth Brayerton did a super job with our Gathering at the Bus this morning. After saying our creed and praying, we loaded the bus and departed for Norfolk, VA at 8:00 a.m.

Most of the 3 hour drive to Norfolk was on a 2-lane highway through beautiful farmland.

We had a service at PrimePlus Senior Center this morning at 11:00. When we arrived, we were at first placed in a small gathering area to sing. The space was far too small for our group and for what we had planned to do, so we were moved into a dining area which was much better. Even though the set up went quickly, we started our presentation about 30 minutes late because we were asked to wait until they served lunch to some of their clients. We sang while the meal was served so there were a few distractions, but we did not let that hinder us. We had some wonderful visits with the senior adults following our presentation.

Even though there was a uniform call from the students for lunch at Cracker Barrel, we instead went to the Piccadilly Cafeteria. I guess you would call that experience a moderate success.

Following lunch we went directly to Colonial Williamsburg. The weather could not have been any better. It must have been in the mid 70s with sunshine and a nice breeze blowing almost all afternoon. We explored Colonial Williamsburg and then got dressed for our concert at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church.

This church building is a part of the colonial architecture of the city. However, it is an active Episcopal church. Our concert tonight was a part of a weekly summer concert series. The church was nearly full for our program. Students received a wonderful reception from those who were in attendance. The challenges for us there were getting used to singing our music with a small organ and a harpsichord rather than the piano. Rick Roe did an outstanding job and the kids adjusted really well.

We talked about where to eat for supper tonight. Chris Clark asked, don’t you just wish Colonial Williamsburg had a food court? Actually, we came pretty close to finding a similar place to eat: we walked down Duke of Gloucester Street to Mellow Mushroom for supper.

Our faithful bus driver, Paul Foster, was patiently waiting for us after supper, at about 10:30 PM, for the drive back to the hotel. Hannah Ison did a superb job with our devotion on the bus on the drive back to the hotel. She really is not only a thoughtful devotional later, but she has a wonderful sense of humor. We all enjoyed her devotion and the way she presented it.
