Day 6

Thursday, June 16 began with a trip to the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. We had been scheduled to sing there, but found out just before tour that we would not be able to come inside the prison.

Our numbers were too large and their staff was too small to accommodate us. So, we did the next best thing. We delivered the Bibles that we brought from First Baptist Church to the prison. They will be distributed to those incarcerated individuals who request one. After leaving Burlington, we set out for one of the most beautiful hotels on the tour, the Omni Washington Resort. Unfortunately, we would not be staying in the hotel, only having a buffet lunch. We arrived at the Omni resort hotel at 12:30 and had one hour to explore the facility and the grounds. It is a magnificent hotel that was constructed in 1902. It originally began for the aristocratic patrons who used the mountains of northern New Hampshire as a summer retreat. At 1:30, we joined together in the main dining room and had the entire dining room to ourselves. We shared a delicious meal which included roast pork, baked chicken, salmon, smashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, salad bar, sandwich buffet, and a delicious dessert assortment. We had a chance to speak to several of our servers. One in particular mentioned her homesickness. When she realized we were a choir, it made her miss her home even more. We called the waitstaff out and sang a couple of pieces for them. The young woman from Jamaica cried as we sang. We left the hotel about 3:00 and drove all the way to Bar Harbor. We were notified on the drive that our puffin cruise, scheduled for tomorrow, had been canceled. The company felt that the winds would be too rough and canceled our trip. They offered to include us on a harbor cruise for Friday instead. We all decided to do that instead of canceling the entire event. In route to Bar Harbor, we had a problem with the bus. Several of the belts broke, and we were stranded on the side of the road for about an hour. Scott Wilson, our bus driver, was fortunate to have about five professional mechanics with us who helped him quickly repair all the belts. (ha ha!) Seriously though, we were able to be back on the road in only one hour. What started as a mechanical issue on the bus ended as a “primitive camping” experience. Several of us had some bodily functions that we had to attend to in the woods near the bus!We all felt better as we got back on the road. We stopped for supper in Bangor, Maine at Chick-fil-A and sang for the restaurant staff and customers before leaving. We were hoping to meet Dr. Glenn Miller, John Adams’ mentor, but we weren’t able to meet in person. We sent him a singing message instead. Cindy Talley did a fabulous devotion on the bus before we got to the hotel in Bar Harbor. Cindy’s devotion was on the song “I must tell Jesus.” She shared what a joy and privilege it is for us to tell our heavenly father all that bothers us and how he loves to hear from us as his children. We arrived in Bar Harbor just about sundown and were struck by how beautiful the village is. We ended our day with the anticipation of spending the next day, Friday, exploring this beautiful town.
