Day 8

On Saturday morning, June 18 we left our northern most point on tour, Bar Harbor, and started south. We left at 8 AM after gathering at the bus and saying our tour creed.

We had prayer and continued south towards Camden, Maine. Camden is listed as one of the most picturesque New England villages. We did not have time to stop but enjoyed viewing the beautiful village and bay in Camden as we drove through the town. We were on our way to Boothbay Harbor, Maine where most of our group would take a 3 1/2 hour trip out to Cabbage Island for a clam bake. The morning was cloudy and very cool when we boarded the boat at noon. We departed at 12:30 PM and it took an hour to get out to the island. One family lives on Cabbage Island and prepares the food for these excursions all summer. There were probably 200 people on the boat traveling together for the food. Each person on the trip chose either lobster or chicken for his/her meal. Our group was seated out near the water on the porch overlooking the bay. The wind was strong and made it very cool. We had fish chowder before the meal. Each person who chose lobster received two lobsters. The protein was accompanied by clams, corn on the cob, a baked potato, an onion, and an egg! We were served blueberry cake for dessert. For those who love lobster, this was a big hit! For those who did not enjoy lobster, we tried to keep our distance from those eating it! The family had set up badminton, cornhole, and horseshoes on the island. We had time to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery after the meal. We got back to the dock at 4:30 and took an additional 30 minutes to enjoy downtown Boothbay Harbor. We boarded the bus and continued our trip down to Freeport, Maine, the home of the flagship store for L.L. Bean. We spent two hours in Freeport and enjoyed shopping and eating our evening meal there. We arrived at our hotel in Portland at 8:45 PM and gathered shortly for our devotion at 9:10 PM. Michael McWhorter let our devotion based on his anthem, “Oh Come.” Tired from a long day, we were all happy to relax in the room and get a good night’s rest.
