Day 10

This morning we amended our departure time from the hotel and left at 9:30 AM for Salem. This meant that we would have about an hour before our “Cry Innocent“ show at the Old Town Square in Salem.

There was some confusion, when we arrived, about the location of the production. But we got there just in time to see the show. “Cry Innocent“ is a dramatic presentation of the witch trials in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. It is an interactive dramatic presentation where those in attendance act as jurors for the accused witch, Bridget Bishop. Several of our group asked questions during the trial. At the end, those in attendance are asked to vote on whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed to a trial. While there were several guilty votes, the group voted to acquit Goody Bishop. After the show ended, our group divided up and found places to enjoy lunch before meeting for a one hour guided walking tour of Salem. The walking tour was conducted by one of the gentlemen who attended our concert in Salem last night. Following our walking tour, several of our group visited Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church. We had an opportunity to speak with the priest there and talk about the history of this beautiful church. The property was given by someone who had been accused of witchcraft by the Puritans. In order to keep the Puritans from confiscating the property, the site was given to the Anglican church in retaliation for the false accusations. This infuriated the Puritans. Following about an hour of free time, we met back at the bus and returned to the hotel for a very brief rest before departing for Fenway Park. 27 of us attended the Red Sox versus Detroit Tigers game on Monday evening. We stayed through the middle of the eighth inning and had fun singing “Sweet Caroline.” We all made it safely back to the bus and started on our trip back to the hotel. Unfortunately we made a wrong turn and our bus ended up on a street that was designed for cars only. We did not have adequate clearance height for our bus and had to get the assistance of the Highway Patrol. It slowed us down, but we were proud of how Scott handled himself in this tense situation.
