Brief Bio of the Choir

The Sanctuary Choir is the primary worship service choir for First Baptist Church, Easley, SC. Our choir is comprised of adults and college students who are members of the church or attend First Baptist Church.

Under the direction of Rick Baumgarner, the choir has shared the love of Christ through choral music of all styles for the past 41 years. In addition to singing regularly in worship services at First Baptist Church, The Sanctuary Choir has also participated in regional choral festivals, shared in local ecumenical worship services, and served local nursing homes, hospices, and hospitals. The choir has sung under the direction of nationally acclaimed choral directors Mack Wilberg, Milburn Price, Greg Fuller, Bingham Vick, Alan Raines, and Jennaya Robison. The choir has toured internationally twice: England and Scotland (1987) and Germany and Austria (1999). This concert tour to New England is our first domestic choir tour.

The choir is led by director, Rev. Rick Baumgarner. He is a graduate of Furman University (Greenville, SC) and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (Louisville, KY). Rick Roe, choir accompanist, has played for The Sanctuary Choir for 36 years. He is a graduate of North Greenville University (Greenville, SC) and Carson-Newman University (Jefferson City, TN).

Description of the Tour

This year’s tour gives us a chance to share the love of God in New England. Our theme is To Love Our God. We are praying that we may be able to give new purpose to the lives of those we encounter along the way. Our theme song, To Love Our God, says, “To love our God, the reason we live; To love our God, the highest call. Nothing satisfies our soul, gives life meaning, makes us whole, For this purpose we were made. To love our God.”

We fly to Boston on Saturday and sing in 2 churches on Sunday morning: St. Leonard’s Catholic Church and Old North Church. After enjoying Boston for a couple of days, we travel northwest towards Burlington, VT. We’ve chosen a particularly beautiful route, enjoying small New England towns along the way. On Thursday we travel east to Bar Harbor, ME. We spend several days along the coast of Maine as we make our way back to Boston and Salem, MA. On our final night, many of us will enjoy a Red Sox game at Fenway Park.

Synopsis of the Musical Program

Using choral music that the choir has enjoyed for some time, we have divided the program into 3 sections:

  • Recognizing God’s love
  • Finding Peace in the Struggle
  • Tracing God’s Hand

  • In addition to the choral music presented, Rick Roe and Brett Levi have prepared several piano duets which will be shared during worship.

The anthem which inspired our tour says, “To love our God, the reason we live.” Scripture says that “we love God because He first loved us.” That beautiful relationship was marred by arrogance, willfulness, and pride - we call that sin. Sin is anything that hurts the heart of God and separates us from Him. Sin, the great chasm or divide between humanity and God, was not in God’s plan from the beginning. God’s word reminds us: “But your sinful acts have alienated you from your God; your sins have caused Him to reject you and not listen to your prayers.” (Isaiah 59:2); “But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Through His son, Jesus Christ, God bridged that chasm once and for all. Our theme song says, “nothing satisfies the soul, gives life meaning, makes us whole, for this purpose we made to love our God.” We hope to be a channel through which individuals may find their purpose in loving Christ.

    Brief Bio of the Choir

One Voice is the Student Choir of First Baptist Church, Easley, SC. Our choir is comprised of students in grades 6-12 and college students who attend seven different schools and multiple colleges, but all attend First Baptist Church, Easley, SC.

For more than 38 years, the choir has shared the love of Christ through choral music of all styles. In addition to singing regularly in worship services at First Baptist Church, One Voice also sings each summer as part of a mission trip or annual choir tour. This year the choir is made up of 35 middle school, high school, and college singers of which 28 are touring this week. In past years, One Voice has toured through SC, NC, VA, TN, GA, AL, LA, MS, KY, OH, WV, PA, Washington, DC, IN, IL, and TX.

The choir is led by two directors, Mrs. Chris Clark and Rev. Rick Baumgarner. Rick Roe, choir accompanist, has served One Voice for 33 years. Choir members are especially thankful to the adult chaperones who are traveling with them on tour this year: Carol Baumgarner, Rick Baumgarner, Meg Boyles, Chris Clark, John Lewis, Cathay Rodgers, Betty Roe, Rick Roe, and Rhonda Woods.

    Description of the Tour

This is One Voice’s tenth annual summer tour in recent years. This year 23 singers and 9 chaperones will be sharing God’s love through music in Charleston, SC; Wilmington, NC; Greenville, NC; Norfolk, VA; Williamsburg, VA; Charlottesville, VA; Roanoke, VA, and Mt. Airy, NC.

In addition to singing in the morning worship service at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC the choir will be presenting a musical program entitled, The Bridge. The program tells the story of how God builds bridges where barriers of separation have divided us. The first bridge God built was the bridge that spanned the “sin chasm” between Himself and humanity. Because of that first bridge and since we now have a passageway over what would have been an impassable gorge, we too can become bridge builders. Through choral music, drama, narration, choreography, and video, the students intend to share the Love of God and His power to transform our society. Students themselves have written and directed the drama. We are truly called to be ONE people, speaking with One Voice!

The choir will also be supporting Bridges to Prosperity (www.bridgestoprosperity.org) to assist this organization in building bridges of opportunity in remote communities where impassable rivers and valleys hinder economic and social opportunity. The choir will also be volunteering this week at The Rescue Mission in Roanoke, VA on Friday. In addition, the student musicians and actors will be leading worship in Baptist churches, rescue missions, and nursing home SC, NC, and VA.

    Synopsis of the Musical Program

The potential for family squabbles is never greater than when someone dies and leaves money, or as in our drama, land to siblings. The most insignificant thing can introduce the greatest heartache. The rift that develops between Erin and Cal affects not only their relationship, but their entire family, and community. The first solution to the problem seemed simple and clear cut, but did nothing to heal the hurt. It took someone bold enough to come up with a solution that would bring long lasting healing. The musical, written by our students, presses the question, “What are we doing to be part of the solution rather than perpetuating the problem?” God sent His only son to be the bridge over our troubled water. Let us join Him and become bridge builders too!

    This Year’s Ministry Challenge

The students adopt a tour mission project each year and our ministry challenge for The Bridge Tour is to raise enough money to help Bridges to Prosperity continue their work of building bridges all over the world. Whether it is in Africa, Haiti, Central America, this organization is called to build foot bridges across dangerous rivers and gorges in order to remove barriers to economic and social development. This eases the burden on poverty stricken regions of the world and allows safer and easier passage. We believe this will teach us all more about how we too can build bridges in our own Middle and High Schools, and help to bridge the gaps that exists between us. Our mission this year is Bridges to Prosperity. It cost $90,000 to build a foot bridge across a dangerous river. We’re trying to raise $6000 to send to B2P.

The choir will be touring with 41 singers this summer in New Orleans, LA; Lake Charles, LA; Houston, TX; New Braunfels, TX; Deer Park, TX; San Antonio, TX; Austin, TX; College Station, TX; and Jackson, MS.

One Voice is comprised of students in grades 6-12 who attend seven different schools, but all attend First Baptist Church, Easley, The choir leads regularly in worship services at the church, attends regional choir festivals, and tours each summer. In recent years the choir has toured through SC, NC, VA, TN, GA, AL, MS, LA, KY, OH, WV, NC, PA,Washington, DC, IN, Il, and MD..

    Description of the Tour

This is One Voice’s ninth annual summer tour in recent years. This year 41 singers and 9 chaperones will be sharing God’s love through music in New Orleans, LA; Lake Charles, LA; San Antonio, TX; College Station, TX; and Jackson, MS.

In addition to singing in the morning worship service at First Baptist Church in Chalmette, LA, the choir will be presenting a musical program entitled, One Voice. The program tells the story of God’s inclusive love demonstrates that this is the way He intended us to relate to one another. Through choral music, drama, narration, choreography, and video, the students share the Love of God and His power to transform our society. Students themselves have written and directed the drama. We are truly called to be ONE people, speaking with One Voice!

The choir will also be helping to combat hunger by working with the Houston Food Bank on Monday morning. The choir will also be singing at “one of the oldest continuously serving cathedrals in the United States:” San Fernando Cathedral. In addition, the student musicians and actors will be leading worship in Baptist churches, Methodist churches, Non-denominational churches, and Catholic churches in LA, TX, and MS

    Synopsis of the Musical Program

As we began developing an outline for the musical program this year, we began to ask what the world would look like if we lived our loves with Christ as Lord. How would THAT effect the way we related to one another. What would that do in terms of the hot issues we hear so much about in the news. If we listened to the voice of God and allowed HIM to speak through us, it would change everything. Seeing God as the center of our lives allows us, in fact, demands that we look past so many things that divide us. When we submit to Christ and allow the Holy Spirit to speak and live through us, the world sees what it should see: the all compassing love of God the Creator. Let us then join together to speak and live the Love of God in unity with One Voice!

    Brief Bio of the Choir

The Youth Choir, One Voice, from First Baptist Church, Easley, SC is a 45-voice mixed choir under the direction of Chris Clark and Rick Baumgarner. The choir will be touring with 42 singers this summer in Louisville, KY; Indianapolis, IN; Chicago, IL; South Bend, IN; Cincinnati, OH; and Sevierville, TN.

One Voice is comprised of students in grades 6-12 who attend seven different schools, but all attend First Baptist Church, Easley, The choir leads regularly in worship services a the church, attends regional choir festivals, and tours each summer. In recent years the choir has toured through SC, NC, VA, TN, GA, AL, MS, LA, KY, OH, WV, NC, PA, and MD.

    Description of the Tour

This is One Voice’s eighth annual summer tour in recent years. This year 42 singers and chaperones will be sharing God’s love through music in Louisville, KY; Indianapolis, IN; Chicago, IL; South Bend, IN; Cincinnati, OH; and Sevierville, TN.

In addition to singing in the morning worship service at Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville, KY, the choir will be presenting a dramatic musical entitled, This Changes Everything, with music by Kyle Matthews. The drama for the musical was written by Dr. Owen Robertson, former Minister of Education at First Baptist Church, Easley, SC. Together, the music and drama convey the power of God to work through His son, Jesus Christ, to transform lives. The Biblical encounters, portrayed in creative fashion, demonstrate that God is still interested in changing lives. One song simply asks, “Are you ready for this?”

The choir will also be serving in these areas by ministering to students their own age at the Illinois Youth Center where young people are working to improve their chances of success. The choir will also be singing at the “oldest continuously serving rescue mission in the United States.” The Pacific Garden Mission will give One Voice the chance to sing AND serve at the rescue mission. Children of the Smoky Mountains will also have a chance to interact and hear the choir sing when One Voice sings for the Smoky Mountain Children’s Home in Sevierville, TN. In addition, the student musicians and actors will be leading worship in Presbyterian churches and Catholic churches in KY, IN, and OH.

    Synopsis of the Musical

Most of us assume that change is a matter of simply making up your mind to do something. Yet so many of us struggle with spiritual growth and often very little life change is occurring. Then where is the breakdown? Are we in partnership with God? Are we allowing God to use his Holy Word, the Bible, to train and instruct us on what we should become? Are we relying on God’s gift, the Holy Spirit, to shape us?

Our tour musical, This Changes Everything, is a dramatic musical with music by Kyle Matthews. One song simply asks, “Are you ready for this?” That’s the question that we each must answer!
